Safe Powerboat Handling: Safety, Rescue, Support

Rob Gibbs
ASF Vice President
Director Of Sailing Education

Arizona Sailing Foundation is offering three Safe Powerboat Handling classes — Safety, Rescue, and Support — this summer. All club-support equipment is powered, and safe operation is key to proper race management and support as well as safety during capsize recovery, person-overboard operations, and a host of other situations.

This two and a half-day, hands-on, on-the-water course is designed for people who want to learn how to safely operate a powerboat or improve their boat-handling skills .

The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) has approved this USSailing course, and an increasing number of states is recognizing it as a way of meeting their boating-safety education requirements.

The course is offered by USSailing's participating facilities throughout the United States and is taught by USSailing Certified Powerboat Instructors.

The course includes the Safety, Rescue, and Support endorsement for anyone using powerboats to perform safety and rescue functions — sailing instructors, coaches, regatta personnel, marine patrols, police and fire rescue personnel, and park rangers—as well as people who want to be certified as operators of race-support boats.

The course is a USSailing Certification tracked just like Keelboat, Coastal Navigation or any other certification course.

The July dates are 26, 28, and 29, and the August ones are 23, 25, and 26
