Most sites have been designed by someone's nephew who took a class on web design in high school or someone who wanted to save a few bucks so he bought the latest and greatest program and did it himself. Alas, even those who specialize in web design are often found in one of the above categories. So the results are predictable. Companies wind up with sites that may look good but never seem to do well with the search engines or sites that just basically suck. Although the bottom-line goal of any Web site design project is to provide good information and easy navigation, attaining these attributes in a search-engine-friendly environment requires know-how and experience (not always the same thing, really).
