Brins Fire Animal Evacuation Information

The Coconino County Health Department (CCHD) has issued the following instructions for pet owners affected by the Brins Fire.

PROCEDURES FOR ANIMAL EVACUATIONS

If you have been evacuated and need information about retrieving your pet:

  • Anyone who may have left a pet inside an at-risk residence and requires an emergency evacuation should call the Coconino County Sheriff’s Department for assistance.

Pets left outside and not confined in a kennel or enclosed area, cannot be rescued (e.g., outdoor cats).

  • Animals that are collected by Coconino County Health Department Animal Management will be taken to the Coconino Humane Association Shelter located at 3501 E. Butler Ave, Flagstaff. When the evacuation order is lifted, the owner should go directly to this shelter to retrieve their pets.

If you have been evacuated and have your pet with you:

  • For those evacuees who have no other alternative, housing is available for their pets. The Coconino Humane Association, located at 3501 E. Butler Ave, Flagstaff is the official animal shelter during this fire crisis for evacuees coming to the Flagstaff area. The Sedona Humane Society, located at 2115 Shelby Drive is the official animal shelter for evacuees coming to the Sedona area. Please be advised that both of these shelters have limited space. Therefore, it is requested that this space be reserved for people who can not place their animals with family or friends and cannot keep their animals with them.

If you have not been evacuated and your home is located in an Emergency Preparedness Alert area. (Kachina Village, Mountainaire, Munds Park/Pinewood, Forest Highlands, Mountain Dell, Pine Del and surrounding areas):

  • If you are evacuated, if at all possible, place your pet in a carrier and take your pet with you! It is not recommended that pets be left inside residences located in the zone of evacuation. There is no guarantee that your pet will be evacuated if left behind.

  • If you do not believe you can take your pet with you, find a family member, friend or boarding facility that can house the pet during the evacuation.

Bulter Ave, Flagstaff is the official shelter during this fire crisis for evacuees coming to the Flagstaff area. The Sedona Humane Society, located at 2115 Shelby Drive is the official shelter for evacuees coming to the Sedona area. Please be advised that both of these shelters have limited space. Therefore, it is requested that this space be reserved for people who can not place their animals with family or friends and cannot keep their animals with them.

The shelters for large animals, for both the Flagstaff and Sedona area, are the Mormon Lake Lodge, 1 Mormon Lake Road, (928-774-0462) and Flagstaff Hay & Grain, 11705 N. Hwy 89 (928-526-3556). Call ahead to determine availability. Additional large animal shelters will be established as needed.
