One Dead, Four Injured In Lake Havasu Boating Accident

AZBW NEWS SERVICE — A 14-year-old boy was killed, and four other people were injured in a collision between two boats on Lake Havasu.

The boy, Malachi Chace of Tenino, Wash., was one of two passengers in a 20-foot Sleekcraft operated by Richard Huebner II, 43, of Olympia, Wash., that collided April 6 head-on with a 20-foot Ranger bass boat operated by John Barnes, 66, of Moreno Valley, Calif., Mohave County sheriff’s spokeswoman Patricia Carter said.

Other boaters pulled the five victims from the water and took them ashore.

The Sleekcraft sank while the Ranger bass boat continued in circles after the collision.

Chace was declared dead at the scene, Carter said.

The four injured persons were transported to the Lake Havasu Regional Medical Center. Huebner and Jordan Gaken, 19, of Lake Havasu City, the other passenger in Huebner’s boat, were later airlifted to a Las Vegas hospital.

Barnes and the other man in the bass boat — Steven Ellis, 47, of Fontana, Calif., — were treated and released that evening from the Lake Havasu hospital.

Carter said that the accident is under investigation.
