Cool Down With A Good Book
SOUTH TO ALASKA: From The Heartland Of America To The Heart Of A Dream
In Oklahoma in 1926, ten-year-old Melvin dreams of living in Alaska. Nearly fifty years later he builds a 47-foot boat in his backyard, launches it on the Arkansas River and cruises to Alaska by way of the Panama Canal.
Prior to his journey, Melvin had never been south of the United States border and had never been on a boat in the open ocean. A true story of courage, love and endurance, South to Alaska follows Melvin's dangerous journey through a watery world he knows little about, to a world he cannot forget.
"Especially during the scorching Arizona summer, this is a “cool” read. — Carol L. Allen,
Arizona Boating & Watersports/Western Outdoor Times.
“Rarely do I find a book so compelling that I can’t put it down until I’ve reached the very last word. But…South to Alaska…is that rare book. –Libbie Martin, Fairbanks Daily News
“A beautiful reminder that life begins where your comfort zone ends.” –Holly Chase Williams, Spokane Coeur d’Alene Living Magazine.
“A journey even Huck Finn would have admired.” –Dan Webster, Spokesman Review.
