The 2008-09 Academic All-WAC women’s swimming and diving team has been announced and includes 15 members of the Northern Arizona team.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.

Of the nine teams, none had more honorees than NAU. New Mexico State tied the Lumberjacks with 15.

Seniors Tami Binek, Elizabeth Brook and Maria Hechanova each earned the honor for a third time, while senior Danielle Filipp, juniors Claire Ferro, Rachael Foe, Jessi Jones, Lindsey Miller, Renee Rother and sophomores Lana Christensen and Taryn Harris and Monica Veit all earned their second-straight honor.

Tami Binek Earns ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Recognition

Northern Arizona’s Tami Binek was one of 32 Division I student-athletes to earn ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District honors in District 8 for the women’s at-large category, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The category includes student-athletes from a wide variety of sports, including swimming and diving, rowing, lacrosse, field hockey, golf, gymnastics and tennis.

Binek, earning the honor for the first time in her career, was named to the third team in District 8, which is comprised of schools from California, Arizona, Utah, Oregon, Nevada, Hawaii and Washington.

The award recognizes student-athletes who excel both academically and athletically in their sport. Binek, a recently graduated senior, has a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.54 as a mechanical engineering major.

This past February, Binek was a part of two school-record setting relays at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships, and earned a silver medal as part of the 200 freestyle relay. She earned a second All-WAC Award as part of the fourth-place and school-record setting 400 freestyle relay.

Binek is a three-time Academic All-WAC honoree and a four-time recipient of a Golden Eagle Scholar Athlete Award.
