Construction Begins On $20 Million Scorpion Bay Marina At Lake Pleasant

Earth moving equipment showed up for work Aug. 21 at the site of the new Scorpion Bay Marina & Yacht Club on the west side of Lake Pleasant Regional Park north of Peoria.

Located just north of the park’s operations center in an area commonly known as “Dirty Shirt,” Scorpion Bay Marina and Yacht Club is a $20 million project of Lake Pleasant Marina Partners LLC.

The 164-acre project is being developed under a 35-year concession agreement with Maricopa County and will be located in a park-like setting featuring state-of-the-art facilities to the growing boating public.

Initial work began with clearing of areas for the marina’s dry-boat storage facility. At build-out, the marina will offer a modern, floating dockage system with high-tech wave attenuation for protection of the on-the-water portion of the facility.

Plans call for floating restrooms as well as a boating accessory, convenience and deli stores, covered and uncovered boat storage slips, boat rentals, a tram system for parking areas and launch ramp.

“We expect the first phases of the project to be finished by March or April,” said Dennis Gorney, owner of Sun Country Marine boat dealership in Phoenix and a partner in the marina. “It is important that the boating public has options when it comes to recreating at Lake Pleasant.”
